Aruba

The UTV tour is a must! So much fun.

We can all agree that 2020 was a difficult year. Living in a pandemic changed us all. Mask mandates, social distancing, lines for grocery stores, and the invisible threat of COVID-19 were just a few of the aspects of what would be the “new normal.” So as countries began to reopen their doors to foreigners, I was eager for a change of scenery. I chose Aruba due to the relatively inexpensive and short flight.

My husband and I spent five days in Aruba. We enjoyed spending our days lounging by the pool or relaxing at the beach. U.S dollars are widely accepted so there’s no need to take out the local currency. Masks are needed indoors but in most outdoor establishments they were optional. There is a bus which can take you downtown or to one of the different stops along the strip. Downtown Oranjestad, is a short 10 minute ride from the main strip of hotels. Several of the restaurants and bars offer happy hour specials.

Aruba is a beautiful island. The beaches are top-notch and the restaurants can’t be beat. The path alongside the hotels and restaurants is perfect for an evening stroll or jog.

Aruba forms one piece of the ABC islands, which includes Curaçao and Bonaire. I had the pleasure of visiting Curaçao a few years earlier and had a wonderful time. After a couple days in Aruba, I noticed how different it was from Curaçao. The dutch influence is apparent linguistically, culturally, and architecturally in Curaçao. However, in Aruba, the majority of the tourists are from the U.S. There are a few buildings in downtown, Oranjestad where you can see the Dutch influence but it’s not as apparent in comparison with Curaçao.
